Portable X-ray Inspection of Power Line Tension Clamps with the TRACELINE™ PX3-HV System

In power transmission systems, tension clamps, joint sleeves, and other compression fittings are critical components for conductor connection and mechanical load transfer. The internal condition of these fittings can directly affect the reliability and safety of transmission lines.

However, many internal features and potential issues cannot be verified by visual inspection alone. X-ray non-destructive testing provides a practical way to examine the internal condition of such components without cutting or dismantling them.

Recently, we applied the TRACELINE™ PX3-HV Portable X-ray Inspection System in a power line fitting inspection scenario. PX3-HV is an integrated solution combining the PX3 portable X-ray system with a mobile suspension device, designed to support inspection of overhead line components in field environments.

The X-ray images obtained in this application show that portable radiographic inspection can help reveal internal structural conditions such as:

• Conductor position inside the fitting
• Crimping area and connection condition
• Visible gaps, deformation, or misalignment under suitable imaging conditions
• Structural irregularities that are difficult to confirm from the outside

In this field setup, the PX3-HV system was used together with its mobile suspension arrangement, and drone support was also involved for on-site coordination and observation. This type of deployment can improve flexibility in outdoor inspection scenarios where components are elevated or not convenient to remove for laboratory evaluation.

For power industry applications, PX3-HV can provide additional internal imaging evidence to support quality verification, maintenance assessment, and failure analysis. The actual inspection arrangement should still be evaluated according to site conditions, component structure, material thickness, imaging requirements, and radiation safety procedures.

This solution is not intended to replace engineering judgment or established inspection standards. Instead, it serves as a practical inspection tool that provides additional internal visibility for critical components in transmission line maintenance and infrastructure inspection.
